That depends on specifics that you are looking at. When Athena is involved she is invoked in her protective aspect or as the goddess of war in just causes.

Ares is more of a general god of Conflict in general, there is a REALLY good essay on him at the web-link I am posting

Mars was the Roman God of War and Athena was the Greek goddess of wisdom, war, the arts, industry, justice and skill.
Mars was kind of a dullard, but Athena, ah...
she was a beauty and smart!

Yes, but only Athena had Nike, the spirit of victory with her. In addition, Athena only supported war for a just cause, whereas Mars supported ANY war. Athena was seen as a protectress of cities and especially HER city, Athens.

Athena is the goddess of wisdom, not quite war. She is more a goddess of the honorable war (a war with justifiable reasons), while Area/Mars is the god of war who doesn't care about the honor or justifications, just blood and deaths.

OK well in Greek mythology Mars is Ares. Ares is the God of war. Anthena on the other hand is the Goddess of wisdom. She can also be the goddess of war but she is mostly associated with wisdom. She is also associated with justice, skills, art and industery. But Ares on the other hand is just war. Most people when you talk about Anthena would be associated with wisdom.

Athena is the goddess of warfare and strategy and is the sister of Ares/Mars, who is the god of war.

Think of one as a general who leads the army into battle (Mars)and the her one as a general who maps the battle out (Athena).

Mars (or Ares, his original greek name) -

God of offensive warfare, slaughter, and unrestrained bloodshed

Athena -

Goddess of defensive warfare, strategy/tactics,
and civilized combat

*on a side note, they were actually siblings, both born of Zeus, god of the heavens, but they were fierce enemies and argued over whose way of fighting was best.
