I volunteer working with disadvantaged children
we tutor them and provide a hot meal. For some of these kids that might be the only meal they eat during the day and the look on there faces when they see food is incredible. I have not yet seen any cons to helping people in need. especially the kids. It is not there fault there no food at home for them or what there lives are like, so to show them that with an education they can get out of that life style is worth it to me.

I created my career out of my volunteer work. The pros"
1. You learn new skills
2. You invest yourself into something you believe in.
3. You meet people with similar interests.
4. You create opportunities for those who need it.
5. You learn service above yourself.
6. It is required to graduate High School in CA.
7. What you learn you can put on a resume.
8. It looks great on college applications.
9. There are just to many pro to give.

Cons:
1. It takes time and that is a valuable thing.
2. You have to find something that matters to you.
3. If other are counting on you, you can't just quit.
4. You don't get paid, but you do get paid in other ways.
5. You have to be willing to put the needs of other before yourself
6. If usually requires some transportation to the site.

But in my life and the life of my family even short term project volunteering is a big part of our lives. Even three of my children joined the military forces, they love the feeling of service to others and they learned it at home.
I hope you do try to volunteer, but find something you really are interested in.

I've done volunteer work at a hospital and a doctor's office. I loved the experience. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to work in a hospital environment or a small practice environment, and volunteering at both places helped me decide. U learn so much when u volunteer and u gain the experience needed to get an actual paid job. It also looks good on a resume. U are also free to choose ur volunteering hours (not everywhere though!)The only negative aspect of it is the paycheck.

I did volunteer work in the children's ward of a local hospital when I was in college. The pros were that the people in charge of the volunteers were very flexible and let me work in my hours around my schoolwork. It was great to be able to keep the children company and feed the babies and rock them. The staff was very nice and appreciative. There were no cons.

I have been a volunteer tutor since the mid 70s. I've given blood every three months since the early 70s. In 1993 i got involved wit hred cross to help the people who lost everything in the floods of Mississippi/Missouri rivers. There's no down side that can compare to the emotional reward of doing something for others.

I volunteer all the time; I love it. I get to meet and hang out with other people who are trying to make a difference in my community (which always makes me feel better after so much negative news) I get to help out and repay my community for everything it has done for me. I get to make a difference; I usually even get to meet the people whom I help and it is an awesome feeling. I guess the only bad thing is that there is a lot to be done so the time commitment can sometimes seem overwhelming.
I volunteer at a "store" that just gives away clothes to the students and their families at my school. I volunteer at the zoo during the summer. I work with a few organizations like SADD, STEP (VOICE), and Indiana Point of Youth that are strong advocates on issues directly relating to youth, another form of volunteering. I go back to my middle school and help out with a group of girls whose sole purpose is community oriented activities like valentines for veterans, etc. I work with my Ecology club to clean up the Wabash, a local river, and this year we are going to all our local elementary schools to give presentations on various aspects of conservation (I'm doing recycling). The satisfaction I get from doing all this is awesome and I strongly recommend you try volunteering in your town, even if it is something small.

Yes, I used to cook dinners for older Veterans at a VFW and through that same organization I did Christmas for 5 needy families. There are no cons to charitable work. The smiles on their appreciative faces is all the reward you need.

If it's for a cause you believe in, there are no cons. Giving of yourself in volunteering not only helps those you are volunteering for, but gives you a true sense of worth.
