We went to our first prenatal visit and we're 6 weeks. I got a pamphlet for birthing classes that emphasize the birthing from within philosophy, but it doesn't explain what that is. Anyone familiar with this?

"BIRTHING FROM WITHIN® is a creative, nurturing, and personal way of preparing for birth and parenting."

Note that ®. It's pretending to be anything but commercial, but it's very much a business.

I found the book (there's a book called ditto) risibly silly. Really. I have a fairly open mind, but that was just junk. What 'information' is in there is highly questionable.

I suppose it might be appropriate for a few extremely frightened and gullible new-agey types, but.

"Extremely frightened, etc" -- there're a lot of assertions that women are scared of/intimidated by stuff I've never been scared of or intimidated by in my life. It borders on insulting. No, wait. It is insulting. It's very patronising.

Most of it is feel-good silliness. In short: if you make 'birth art' (bad drawings, mostly), and plan on howling like a coyote during labour, it's, uh, good.

Get a good book on childbirth; education is the best 'philosophy' out there. "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" is excellent.

It's a book, and it's wonderful! Someone else called it arts-and-crafty (not a direct quote). I can see that, but you don't have to go all-out. You can take the things you agree with and leave the things you don't. Reading the book changed my life. I did not attend the classes, but it sounds like fun. The author emphasizes a lot of drawing/sculpting/painting, but it's just for expression. It's not fine art. I also read The Birth Book by Martha Sears, and the two books together presented a balanced view of natural childbirth.

Hmm, I am sure it has something to do with the emotional and/or ties and self preparing of it. As far as the actual birthing process, I think the philosophy may be referring to the connections spiritually. Once the child is spiritually born and maybe accepted the natural and physical aspect of the project may be easier and more accepting.

That is what I think it is referring to, but I could be off some ways. :) Congratulations

Birthing from within is awesome. Instead of focusing on the medical and physiological components of birth it focuses on birth as a portal to yourself and motherhood. The facts of birth don't truly help woman pass through this portal but connecting to our inner strength, larger community of support and discovering what you need to know to give birth. All this trasitions well into life after the baby has arrived as well.

I bought the book but it is a little to artsy crafty new agey for me. Nice concept though. I might have enjoyed the classes but they don't have a group near me.

i'm not sure what that means
but i have an idea
my friend has been born like this and i have also heard of it in a movie
the baby can't get out through the vagina or through c-section
so the doctors have to cut the mother's stomach and take the baby out
