After the civil war and with the beginning of the industrial revolution cotton and other agricultural jobs declined. Also, those who had been slaves often had no place to go. At this time, major manufacturing jobs and industrial work was in tremendous growth in the north and there was a black migration to large cities such as Chicago and Detroit. Meanwhile, those who chose to remain in the south continued to find themselves in a life of poverty. Those in the south are more likely to have maintained a lifestyle more congruent with their history and to live among other black people. Those in the north were more likely to find themselves affluent and in a higher level of integration with whites. This created a significant difference between the lifestyles and experiences of blacks in the north versus the south and is the basis for many of the lifestyles and views being incongruent with each other between the two regions.

Very little, I think the southern Black people out in the country have more freedom that the northern Black people that live out in the country, now the ones that live in the big cities have a difficult time living a good decent life style. That's the way I see it, now I have been known to be wrong -- but not as much as my wife lets on!

I think it is a city-country thing, though those from the north are a bit more assertive.
