The bird flu, so far, cannot be transmitted human to human, so we're pretty safe from it.
If/when it does mutate to be able to pass from human to human, it may also change in other ways, and may not be as deadly as it now is. Besides, the human population may develop some resistance by then, one way or another.
Also, if/when it does break out in Asia, it is customary to start making a vaccine to prevent it by the time it works its way around to us. This may not help much in Asia, and it's not totally foolproof, but it should cut down on casualties.
I don't know, but I'd guess they are already working on a vaccine against the present form, which, though not very good for preventing the expected mutated form, could provide some crossover immunity and reduce the severity of the outbreak.

I think I'm more afraid of terrorists getting ahold of a nuclear suitcase and detonating it in the US, than I am afraid of Bird Flu !
