sub pump and trentch in a basement?

This is a continuation of a question that I recently asked. In regards to the trentch going across the basement floor, why would this particular trentch be uncovered. It looks like the person drilled around it. The actual trentch or pipe is exposed. As stated before, the house isn't finished being renovated, would this be something that can be covered?

the trench would certainly be covered when finished

It should be covered with something that water can drop thru.
Some kind of firm screen or wire
