Finish building the computer by plugging everything into the motherboard (hard disk, ram, cpu, blah blah), go into the bios (del or F2) and set it to boot from CD (usually in one of the first two pages of the bios), put your OS CD into the drive, boot up and you're ready to go.

The operating system is stored on your hard drive, and if you used the same hard drive, you shouldnt have to reinstall the operating system. However, if you also put a new hard drive in along with the new motherboard, then:
1. Be sure to use a good Operating system, such as Kubuntu at www.kubuntu.org. If you use Windows (any version) expect to be hacked into, and have problems forever). This is especially true with the new Vista.
1. Change the bios to boot from the CDrom. To do this, turn computer on and immediately click delete (on some computers it is F1 or F2) dozens of times until the Bios comes up. Then go to Boot and change the boot order to boot from the CDrom drive. You may be able to skip this step by just putting the OS Cd in the drive and turn it on. If it boots from the Cd, then skip this step.
2. Follow instructions and load OS.

The motherboard guide must have a good setting up handbook. As for OS reinstall, it should not be needed if it is the very similar sort. If no longer , merely shop on with the activates even as positioned the Vista disk in. it truly is going to leave all of your files archives intact.

I have found that if I stick with the same motherboard manufacturer, I can often use the same C: drive and run the system I ran on the previous board. It will reinstall all the devices as you start up.

I am assuming hard drive and DVD/CD rom drive are attached.

(if the hard drive is empty) Put OS in CD drive and boot up the computer. If there is something on hard drive you need to go into your bios and select first boot from CD drive. The Os should be able to boot from CD.

Err, buy XP or Vista, put the CD or DVD in the drive, and follow the instructions!
