Acoustic guitar will teach you melody. While bass is probably fun, and with some artistic talent and skill you could play a bass with melody, the acoustic is versatile. You could play alone or in a band (especially with an amplified acoustic). You could play out on the porch, in the park, or at a party (great chick magnet). You could play in your bedroom, for those times that you want to be alone. It's also great for composing, whether alone or with another musician, and composing is great for developing yourself as a total musician (songwriting and lyric writing).

If you know how to play guitar, you can play bass. The specialized techniques on bass would take a little extra study.

For a good acoustic at a reasonable price, look into Oscar Schmidt, made by Washburn. Warm tone at a good price.

There are no more choices for acoustic than electric. Both instruments contain all the same notes. It's a matter of preference. Will you be playing in a band? Will the band be playing acoustic instruments or electric instruments? The only difference between the two is that one is amplified electronically and the other is amplified (to a much lesser extent) by natural acoustics. But if you're playing for yourself and don't want to dish out the money for an amp, then I'd go acoustic. Or, even though they're a little more expensive than your average beginner's acoustic or electric, some companies do produce Acoustic/Electric guitars which can function either way. But whatever choose to do, the key here is that you can't do anything with one that you can't do with the other (except use crazy effects pedals on an electric), and neither is easier to play than the other.
I am a guitarist, and I personally prefer the timbre (sound quality) of acoustic instruments, as I find them much more rich and colorful. But electric instruments have alot to offer as well.

Depends on what you want to do with your music. Start with guitar.. You can learn chords and notes on your instrument. If you end up playing 4 string bass guitar you'll basically know the notes on your instrument. I've played guitar for 40 yrs., learned piano (needed it for music theory) 30 yrs. ago and started playing bass when I was 25.. Can play a variety of styles, but I prefer jazz. Good luck on your journey..

There are experience players that play acoustic AND bass. So you decide. A song doesnt sound good without bass.
