To be really geeky, all rivers begin in the sea. Evaporation takes place and the sea evaporates as water vapour. As the vapour rises it condenses into clouds. Eventually the clouds become too heavy and fall as rain. Some of the rain will fall near the tops of hill/mountains. Usually these hills wiill soak up the rain. Eventually so much water is underground that it breaks the surface as a small stream. As the stream decends the hill it joins with other streams and when it reaches the valley bottom starts flowing away assisted by gravity. As it continues flowing towards the sea, other streams join into it and eventually the stream becomes big enough to be a river. Eventually the river will become tidal and flow into the sea where the process will start all over again.

What goes up must come down. evaporated water rises to the heavens, coats the mountains with rain and snow. Rivers always start in the high country and flow down hill.
