Do you hang around with anyone, or do you require that the people around have certain redeeming characteristics? I'm just curious as to how everyone else makes friends.

first - making friends
being accessible and available and open is a start. smile - be the first to say 'hi' and show an interest in others. look for things in common with others but don't blindly follow the crowd - having the right friends is far more important than having loads of friends
second - what to look for
i check out what kind of persons each individual usually attracts as this can show what they are about too
what i personally look for are folks who are amenable to me who share something that i value too
i am a christian so although that is important to me i prefer to have about 50% of my friends who are not christian for example as these people keep me honest (provided they can respect my worldview too) - but usually these people do share other things with me in common too - ie work, college, hobbies, location, clubs, family contacts, pets etc

Well, I am 29 and I have had the same best friend since we were 11 years old. We have kept it going because she listens to me, never puts me down, sticks up for other people, is outspoken, laughs at my jokes, is different from me, but enough the same, honest (even if it hurts), and strong-willed. I don't know what I was looking for when I was 11, but it just has worked for the last 18 years.....not many people can say that.

As long as the person is not clingy, surrounded by un nessesary drama, has there own life and is able to hold a serious conversation but at the same time knows how to have fun...there okay with me! Oh yeah and they have to be honest...if you have time to lie to me then I dont have time for you..

Somebody who is not bossy. And someone whoh let's you talk. And ask's you question's as well. They let there be a two way conversation and they don't do all the talking.
