When the game first came about it used a larger (about 12" in diameter), soft ball. As the game evolved, the ball became smaller and harder, though it's still a bit softer than a baseball (or "hardball").

It's called softball because relative to a harder baseball, the ball is indeed soft. In many baseball little leagues girls are allowed to play with the guys and over many years of playing little league, I did have a couple of teammates who were girls. However, most girls prefer playing softball, while most guys, at least in their teenage years, prefer baseball. Bottom line, whichever sport you play, enjoy it!

because compared to a baseball a softball can be considered soft

there are separate teams because typically males put much more force into the ball than most girls it's just a safety factor

Altough the ball isn't tender in any respect, and also you may get injured, that isn't any longer as not person-friendly and unsafe as baseball. i in my opinion performed baseball for 30 years, and now, at 40, I play softball. that is an noticeably different ingredient to have a pointy grounder hit your way at third base with a softball than with a baseball.

Whir I live we have co-ed softball leagues and the ladies play just as good as the guys do or even better lol. I played on some all-star teams with allot of ladies.
I have allot respect for all the ladies That I had the privilege of competing with.

hold a baseball and a softball. the baseball is more compact and the softball dosent feel that way. I NEVER want to get hit by a baseball again! When i got hit by a softball it hurt but definitely not as bad. a baseball is harder than a softball.

Yeah separate teams suck!! Just like separate locker rooms. So as a show of protest lets shower together in a Locker Room of unity. I encourage all Women to throw off the bonds of male oppression and Join us in our Naked Shower of Freedom.

Only in America!!!

No I play softball and I am the bomb. They call it softball because they think that girls aren't good enough to play baseball.
