Why is a country with the largest oil reserves in the world and a tremendous amount of desert available for solar power developing nuclear technology?

Oh and why isn't the mainstream media reporting that the leader of the country has some crazy Armageddon like beliefs about the hidden Imam?

They are trying to develop the ability to build and deploy nuclear weapons, the Europeans have proven that beyond any doubt.
The proposal they offered Iran included 2 "free" light water nuclear reactors, but Iran turned it down.
Why does that matter?
light water reactors are more efficient but do not create the plutonium by product required for nuclear weapons.
That was when the Europeans decided to take it to the security council and stopped negotiating, the Iranian intention became obvious.
Motivations for wanting nuclear weapons for Iran?
-keep the USA from trying to overthrow Iran
-keep Israel from feeling like they have a military trump card over Iran
-extend Iranian influence in the region by creating a nuclear state that some nations will ally with and others will envy and fear.
By creating a situation where the nuclear weapons issue becomes a stale mate Iran basically hopes to keep other nations from being willing to take action against them. This would allow Iran to be able to do what they want without fear of reprisal from some nations due to fear.
To the second part of your question, i have no idea.
Possibly because that would strengthen US resolve to do something about Iran?
The media is not in favor of US military action anywhere in the world and doesn't present evidence that could support such ideas. It goes along with the agenda many news agencies house in their editorial rooms. It's a case of "group think" where everyone basically holds the same world view.

Don't worry North Korea, Cuba,Russia could have destroyed USA by now... this is just a Bush tactic to get your mind off the issues in Iraq by the repubs and build enough tension for a showdown between USA and Iran.
