Women who spend a lot of time in each others company will often find that their periods synchronise. It has to do with always being in contact with each others' pheromones (secreted in sweat). Pheromones act as triggers for our own hormones, which regulate our periods. It's also thought that men's pheromones can affect a woman's period, as well.

Yes, believe it or not the phenomenon you describe is known as menstrual synchronicity. It has been observed among women in the same family, living together, or in some cases working closely together. I think the first real studies came out around 1970 or so, and there are lots of theories to explain it but no hard evidence that I'm aware of to explain it. Check it out on the web, it's wild reading. Some think it is due to the nature of cycles themselves, and the fact that they are all within a 21-28 day range to begin with, and can be affected by things like stress and environment- which women in a group would have in common. We don't tend to pay much attention to it as a rule because it's just not a usual topic of discussion, but yes, it is a known phenomena.

Females secrete pheromones and it gets stronger before your period. So when you are in close contact with other females (like if you have female roommates or sisters) your body responds to those pheromones. After a while your hormonal levels will sync and you'll start getting your periods together. It's not 100% of the time but most of the time, girls who live together or have close contact will eventually synchronize their periods.

Your grandma is telling the fact, it relatively is a nicely-documented phenomenon. regularly there is one "chief", to which different roommates synchronise to. examine has shown that the end result's led to via components interior of underarm odour (whilst they gathered underarm odour from the chief in pads, and uncovered different women persons to those pads, they synchronised to this chief even without ever assembly her). it relatively is believed to act by something led to the vomero-nasal organ (or VNO, a small organ interior the nostril). the clarification at the back of this snychronisation might nicely be defined in evolutionary words. In primate communities, in basic terms the alpha male gets to impregnate the girls persons with the intention to bypass on the top-high quality genes. yet whilst this persisted for many generations, the team might replace into too interbred and so risky and susceptible. via having all women persons menstruate (and for this reason additionally ovulate) concurrently, it gave adult males different than the alpha male a huge gamble to impregnate a girl and inject some new genes into the gene pool. Thereby scuffling with the team to alter into too interbred. wish that explains.

Actually, it is true to an extent. Women tend to get their periods around the same time as other women they are around a lot (like friends would be) I asked my doctor about it once, because my mom & i used to get them in the same week, like, all the time.

If girls live together, or are around each other all the time then their cycles usually end up around the same time. I don't know why this happens, but it does. :)
