Why are we such an instant gratification society?

Have we always been that way or we have become that way recently?

Instant gratification = poor get poorer due to interest
Instant gratification = rich get richer
Instant gratification = no money to give to the poor
Instant gratification = starving children
Instant gratification = war
Instant gratification = loss of caring for what really matters in the world
