Baby's greatest risk is that you may be tempted to name him "Speedy".

Alka-Seltzer contains:

aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid)
baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
citric acid

The last two are obviously safe as they are regular food items. However aspirin is not recommended for use during breastfeeding because of it's association with Reye's Syndrome.

The good news is that generally Reye's Syndrom only happens if you give Aspirin to a sick child. So firstly your child would have only gotten a small dose, and secondly hopefully your baby is not sick currently. So the risks should be almost non-existant.

If you want to discuss the risks more in detail either talk to a Pharmacist. They are very knowledgeable about drugs, and generally you can just call them.

Or call Motherisk.org. They are a clearinghouse of this kind of information:

Motherisk's Home Line - (416) 813-6780 - for information about the risk or safety of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal products, chemicals, x-rays, chronic disease and infections during pregnancy. [This is a toll call to our Toronto call centre. Callers may have to wait up to 10 minutes to speak to a counsellor.]

These Helplines are open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST

Dial a 10-10 number and it won't cost you more than a buck or two.

Mystic Eye gave some good advise.

I'd like to add that you can pump for the next few feedings instead of actually breastfeeding and then throw away the milk instead of feeding it to your baby. Unfortunately you most likely have to feed your baby formula for the next few hours until the medicine is out of your system unless you have back up milk in the refrigerator or freezer.

Reyes syndrome is very serious and can be fatal, never give a baby aspirin, or any medication containing aspirin.

This product contains aspirin which will be passed on to the baby. Reye's syndrome is linked to children or teens that take aspirin. Call the pediatrician to see what they think about it and if you should feed your baby another way until the medicine has time to get out of your system. If they tell you to wait, you can pump until it's safe to resume feeding the baby. If you just stop without pumping, you will become engorged and milk production will suffer. The best thing to do now is call the pediatrician.

Not to sound cynical, but its usually better to ask BEFORE you take something.

Here are Alka Seltzer's Instructions:

Significant amounts of this medicine may pass into breast milk. It should not be used by breastfeeding mothers as it may be harmful to the nursing infant. Seek medical advice from your doctor.

i am breastfeeding, and for heart burn I use zantac. the reason I chose this is that doctors perscribe zantac to infants, so I know it is safe in small amounts for infants. never use an asprin based product, but i hope this once was okay.
