I think you are referring to ixnay, which means like end, or stop. It's pretty much synonmous with "nix"

It's really just Pig Latin and became widely used after appearing multiple times on the Three Stooges.

Ex. Ixnay on the yelling

First of which, you may be mistaking "x-nay" for "ixsnay" (Pronounced: "icks-neigh"). "ixsnay" is pig latin.

Pig Latin is basically a crude coding system used by kids and stuff. In Pig Latin, you take your word, put the first letter at the end and add "ay". For example, the word "Ball", in Pig Latin would be "Allbay"

Therefore "ixsnay" would translate to "nix". This is old slang for "cut back on" or "stop doing/saying that".

That's why you hear people saying "ixsnay on the artsfay" translating to "Nix on the farts.", meaning: "Cut back on the farting."

you mean ixnay.. it means to not do or talk about something.. so for example: i'd say" ixnay about the cheat sheet in front of the teacher.." meaning don't talk about it in front of the teacher
