in every show they asscoiate rats with cheese. how did that trend start, that rats like cheese? do they?

In my experience, rats absolutely love cheese. I have had rats for a while and occasionally give them a small piece of cheese each because they enjoy it so much. A while ago when I had a particularly food-obsessed ratty, she would eat her piece in a flash then tackle her cage mates for theirs!
Cheese isn't very good for rats though. Many rats are actually lactose intolerant so things like cheese, chocolate and especially milk have to be fed with care - either in tiny amounts or not at all. Cheese is also very high in fat which makes pretty it bad for everybody, but yummy nonetheless :)

I had a pet rat and he went crazy over cheese. I'm not sure how the trend got started though

Rats will eat almost anything but cheese is not very good for them. Most will eat it but it does not mean they should eat it.

That's just a stereotype on rats. Rats don't like anything in particular, they will eat anything. Wood, furniture, plastic you name it. When it comes to food rats have no preference they just eat.

rats are nasty if there not pets and carry a ton on diseases you must have close water within 300 feet in order for them to stick around
