Will Scotchguarding a pair of silk shoes really keep them from getting dirty?

Will it protect them from water damage or does it only repel dust? What exactly does Scotchguard do, and how effective is it? A woman in the shoe department at Saks told me to use it.

scotchguard is only a repellent, mud and dirt will still stick to your shoes, but it will be easier to clean them after wards. It also repels water, if you step in a puddle you can still get water damage, same with snow. You still need to take care of your shoes after you have applied the scotchguard.

also, after time, you need to re-apply it as it will wear off in time.
