best all round break-in would be on non-congested freeway starting with a slower (50mph) constant speed for 15 minutes then increasing speed 5 mph every 15 minutes. once you reach the speed limit don't exceed it return to lower speed and repeat cycle for 300 to 500 miles. after break-in change oil and your done. the only exception to this would be if chrome piston rings where installed, double the miles to break-in. chrome rings are much harder and take longer to seal good. these are usually only used in race engines.

First of all NO 70's All town driving till you get a couple of hundred miles then 45 - 60's No WOT ( wide open throttle) use varying speed for at least 200 miles. The whole idea with all of this to very the temperature of every moving part in the fresh engine. After these precautions just drive it. I'd drain the oil @ 2,000 miles. At this time do a little trick when changing your oil filter. Your filter is attached vertically. From this day forward fill your filter a little at a time through the center hole till it's full, BEFORE attaching and tightening. This practice will assure you of a 1 - 2 second quicker total pump up of your oil pressure. Less chance of a horrid dry start.

keep it between 1800 and 2000 rpm's for 20 minutes, if it gets hot after 10 minutes, shut it down, let it cool, change oil and filter, and then finish off the last 10 minutes. (use real oil, not a synthetic), after the initial 20 minutes, change the oil and filter, then ease it in for a couple hundred miles. If it has chrome molly rings, it wont be broke in till about 2000 miles, however, I doubt it does. I have several high performance engines, the 305's are good engines and if its not modified ( bore over, stroked, high compression) you should have no problem. What I described above is the safe way for a modified, and would be good practice for any engine.

i own a repair shop, and actually you need to start out with it at around 50-60 mph ,for a few days ,and make sure you don't pull no sudden starts with it for a while, give it about a week and change the oil in it,and then start driving it the way your pretty much going to drive it the rest of its life,,just phase it in lightly after about 2 good weeks of driving you can pretty much drive it like you would any other car ,keep a check on all the fluids though even a new engine will use a little oil during the break in period of it so don't get alarmed if you do have to add a half of a quart to it for the first month but after that it should seat in and not use any, good luck ,with it,enjoy it ,the 305 is a real good engine, hope this help,s.

Drive 100 miles gently. Change oil and filter. Drive the next 400 miles at different RPMs, as in, not on the highway at constant speed. Around town and a quick jaunt down a straightway works. Change oil and filter again and you should be all set.

first 20minutes should be a 2000 rpm solid extra oil to camshaft-then change the oil ,vary rpm alot and change the oil change about 100 miles and at 500 then 1000 then 1750 etc etc remember CHANGE THE OIL!new motors come up with metal fragments that can destroy em thats the longevity wayto do it

i got told the same thing by a mechanic with a 351, for the first say 20 hours of the motors life, start slow, have a quick burn, go average speeds, fast again, slow. just keep altering heaps.

You always drive the vehicle slow and break in the engine slowly, dont over rev the engine, like 5000 rpms or more.....
