Just curious. I see people being shot generally near the chest and some gurgle some don't. Why do they gurgle blood and where are they shot?

When you see someone in the movies bleed out of their mouth, it means that they have an internal injury in their chest or stomach which is making blood come up their esophogas. When you see someone bleeding out of their ears, it is a head injury.

Most of the gurgling is a chest shot. Whether the victim gurgles depends upon where in the chest he is shot. If the bullet is of significant calibre, then no matter where he is hit, he will be dead due to massive shock, the heart stops and no blood or gurgle.
If the calibre is small, and the lung only is hit, then the victim is suffering a "sucking chest wound" and much gurgling occurs due to the victim's attempt to draw air in though the trachea only to have the air drawn in via the entrance wound as well. Be sure that the victim, if you are trying to help, does not have an exit wound as well which would be more extensive depending upon the type of bullet eg full metal jacket .308 or other 30 cal would have an entrance and exit wound of about equal diameter. Small calibres may not have an exit wound. If the bullet is a frangible or hollow point, the entrance wound is going to be significantly larger than the entrance; the time of gurgling will be dependent upon how long it takes for hypovolemic shock to occur eg breathing to stop which will when the heart stops.

Now the other type of gurgling is a wound to the digestive tract, say the stomach; it will fill with blood and come up the esophagus where the victim, if conscious will try to swallow it again; failing that he will leak a lot of blood and gurgle upon it.

A lower wound, say the top area of the small intestine will leak blood all over the peritoneal cavity and it may find its way to the esophagus (see above) but likely through the anus, where there will be a kind of gurgling there too.

This blood is caused when the shot ruptures one of the lungs. Because there is so much blood in that part of the body, when there is an injury, it will quickly flow into the lungs, and it is then forced out of the mouth along with the air when the person exhales.

The scenes in the movies are fake, obviously, but the effect of a shot to the lungs is quite real. Deer hunters often try to hit the deer in the lungs for exactly this reason - it leaves a trail of blood which makes the animal easy to track.

In the aorta (the largest heart artery-near the center of the chest plate)if that is severed it will spurt out dark red blood like a hose... or just below the center of the rib cage (where it ends) it is soft there and goes straight through to the intestines which will be very bloody. Blood....guts....YEAY! My kind of question!
