I had the same problem with my daughter. She screams when she does pass, and when you see it, you understand why. . .

What we did for our daughter is:

1. Switched her formula to a low Iron formula instead of anything regular
2. With each feeding of formula, we gave her 1 oz. of applejuice right in the bottle with her formula (1 oz for every 4 oz of formula).
3. Lots of water - we found the flavored water was good because she liked the flavor, and it was much lower in sugar than any juice
4. She got a very high fiber diet - oatmeal and oat cereal instead of rice, applesauce, bananas, prunes, carrots, squash (her favorite)

I understand your pain. We would go to the doctor and complain about the same thing time after time. Our daughter was one step away from getting a fiber supplement to help her with her bm's. She still has the issue (18 months now), and my husband and I keep close track of her bm's. I will allow her to go a day without, and if she doesn't the second day, I then give her a suppository. Make sure when you administer the suppository into her, that you do it towards the wall, as opposed to directly centered, for it will become impacted in bm and not work. Against the wall will allow for absorbtion, and it will then do the job.

Some other things we did (other than food):

1. Lots of warm baths. We made them a little warmer than before we discovered the issue because it seems to help. It is not uncommon for her to go right in the tub (better there than not at all. . .)
2. A bottle of water before bedtime
3. Relaxing time, like gentle massages
4. Exercises (believe it or not). Babies spend a lot of time on their bottoms until they learn to move. Getting on the floor and playing with her, doing things like wrestling gently with her, sitting in front of her and take her hands and pulling her to her feet and towards you, and then lowering her down again, and touching her feet to the face or where ever (folding her in half, so to speak) all were fun games we played, and they helped get things going.

And talk to your doctor. It is your job as mommy to speak for your daughter. If things aren't working, then tell the doctor and find out what else can be done. Keep it up until things are normal. That is what we did. There were phone calls, trips to the ER (for tears - so sad. . .), and anything else needed. Nothing was too much for her, and we did it. I am glad we did, and now my husband and I are on top of the issue.

Good luck!!

hi, the ER isn't necessary, this isn't an emergency. It can however turn into a chronic problem. You really need to find a stool softener that works. I'm not sure where you are, but here in australia there are coloxyl drops that are suitable for an infant.once the bowel is empty you need to give a REGULAR dose of stool softener of some sort to keep it that way.The lady above suggested fibre and that is a good way of adding bulk to the stool. You may need to give more fluids that are not milk in her diet. Added fluid can sometimes help ,as if there is not enough fluid in the diet, the fecal matter will dry out before it gets to the lower colon to be passed out.
Add fluids not milk.(use milk as usual for feeds)
add stool softener
add fibre supplement.
If all the above as a 3 pronged attack do not help ,you will need to ask your Doctor for a referral to a pediatrician or gastrointestinal specialist

please don't give your baby an enema. with hard stools and babies take out all dairy products including formula. buy a can of soy formula. no rice cereal or bananas. all may cause constipation. push fluids like diluted apple,or prune juice and water. you can also mix a small amount of Castor oil in your baby's juice so that it will aid in the passing of the stool. Call your doctor now.

Take Care and Good Luck

Definitely ask the pediatrician. Maybe they can recommend a stool softener for her. My 2 year old has the same problem and it gets worse because she holds it in since it hurts her. We started giving her Benefiber (the pediatrician suggested it but I am not sure if your daughter is too young..ask about it too). Benefiber is a fiber supplement. It seems to be helping. Good Luck!

Put watered down prune juice in her bottle. Apple juice works too, but not as well.If this doesn't work, take her to her doctor ASAP, she could have a blockage. You also might try switching formula. She could be having trouble digesting it. My daughter had the same problem.

Well I can sugguest that you try a teaspoon or two of brown sugar in her bottle...and repeat with every bottle till she does go...the sugar will not hurt her but will help soften things up and get her moving again...you will probably only need two or three doses, and then in the morning when she has her cereal add a teaspoon to it to help keep her regular.

Its one of those old wives tales that actually works...

Sounds like she possibly has a bowel disorder, I would go to your paediatrician and insist to see a specialist. Don't let them tell you everything is fine and just push you away. If you are yahoo answers I'm sure you have tried everything and are desperately trying to get help. Don't worry, everything will be OK. No one knows your baby like you do and if you think that something is wring then it's probably true - remember that when you go to the doctor.

Good luck.

ok, give prune baby food. a few bites of that and my daughter lets it out
If she doesnt pass anything for 24-48 hrs, go to the ER. My son didnt poop once for 2 days and was cranky complaining of a tummy ache-turns out the bowl had hardened in his Colon , long story short, it nearly killed him. and took hours to soften and get out.

Give some prune baby food, my pediatrician told me to do that if my son ever had that problem.

Take her to an ER, preferably in a children's hospital, and do it now.
