Zeus and Hera are the main gods of greek mythology. Zues had an affair with Leto and she gave birth to Apollo and Artemis (twins) without any pain.
When Hera had found out about Zeus and Leto's pregnancy, she sent a serpent Python to pursue the twins mother during her pregnancy. Four days after the twins were born Apollo called for a bow and arrows. When Hephaestus had furnished these Apollo went in search of Python. At length he managed to trap the serpent in a gorge by Parnassus and promptly slew the monster with his arrows. Apollo then had to purify himself, going into temporary exile in Thessaly. That's really all my book says about their births.

There are several contradictory stories about their birth. In one, Zeus knocked up Leto (not related to Duke Atreides), and Hera, being jealous, cursed her to have to give birth on ground that had never been touched by sunlight. Instead of going the simple route and having her go deep into a cave, Zeus raised an island (Delos) from the depths of the ocean, and she gave birth while grasping a sacred palm tree. Artemis was born first and helped Leto deliver Apollo the next day.

In another story, Artemis was birthed on Ortegia, and then ferried Leto over to Delos where Apollo was born the next day.

In another story, Hera cursed Leto to not be able to give birth on firm ground or any island at sea, but the island of Delos was, at the time, a floating island and thus was excluded from the curse. Afterwards, Apollo secured the island to the sea floor in thanks.

In yet another story, Hera merely forbid anyone to give Leto shelter, so she just wandered around looking for a place to give birth because she kept being turned away.

And it yet another story, Hera set the monster Python to chase Leto down and kill her, and Delos was the only place where she could escape her persuit.

Basically, the only consistent aspects of the story are that Leto (a minor goddess) was the mother, that Zeus was the father, that Hera caused problems, that Artemis was born first, and that Apollo was born on the island of Delos.

Yes, they were twines born on the Island of Delos, just about five miles southwest of my "Roots" island of "Tinos." Delos was considered to be the cultural/religious center of the Cyclades islands of the Aegean see.
