i'm doing science olympiad right now... our high school is one of the best in the nation, got 6th place last year (mira loma high school). Science olympiad is definitely enjoyable and worthwhile, and it does wonders for your college apps. I definitely would recommend participating. In terms of difficulty, it depends on how good your school is. My school is a science-strong school, and every year we send science bowl and science olympiad teams to nationals. As such, competition inside the school is fierce, and i have to study constantly for my science competitions. Other places maybe not so, but basically if u enjoy science go and try out. You may have to do some reading on your own, but it's not too bad. Basically what you will be doing is choosing a few events, and then researching how to do those particular events (if your doing a study event), or just spend lots of time building something, for building events. Check out the website for more info and the events; they have 23 events, in pretty much every single subject imaginable, from robots, to bugs, to genes, to stars.

There are other science olympiads actually, not sure which one you're referring to, although the one i mentioned above is the most popular one. THere are also individual science olympiads in a particular subject, such as Biology Olympiad or Physics olympiad. These are different; they're just basically a series of tests. These are hard, they take a few hundred students around the nation for semifinalists, and then narrow it down to 20 or so. These ones you just have to do tons of self-study and research to learn everyhting you cna about a single subject.

As a matter of fact, I have when I was in Jr. High/ High School. It's generally a good idea to look at the topics before hand and study (it's usually a pretty broad category so that can be hard), but I personally just showed up and did the thing. It's pretty fun, though, if you're a science person, and if you can find some friends to do it with you its even better. If you are going alone, I wouldn't recommend it, it'd probably be pretty boring.

I have competed in this competition called science league. It really isn't easy, especially if you haven't learned some of the material. But you should look for some websites that should help you. And you should participate, because it will make colleges happy and it won't even count as a big test grade or whatever.

good luck:)
