Shanny was sticking up for the teams star. Jagr gets no respect as far as calls go. Maybe it is because he is so big and strong the Refs let him take more abuse. The guy is a first Ballot Hall of Famer. If Crosby took the hits Jagr does , the slashes, the interference , Bettman would pass a law protecting him. The Pittsburgh coach was crying about Crosby getting hit today, please you can not go near the guy without getting a call. Shanahan has been a great leader on the Rangers even though they are falling fast. He should be captain. Hopefully Avery will bring a bit of spark to the team. Maybe Shanahans comments will wake up the Refs.

I'm a little surprised, but considering Jagr's performance this year, he's doing as well as he's always done. The game is the game, and if you have to resort to placing blame on the rules and the guys that enforce them, then maybe you shouldn't play the game.
Jagr has always been a whiner, and the truth came out when he demanded a huge contract from Pittsburgh, a team that has almost always struggled financially, or a trade. He was traded to Washington and failed to be an integral part of the team, performing as though he was the team and nobody else could do anything (which was partly true, but was also fulfilled by Jagr's selfish play). With New York he has learned to be a part of the team again, but he's always complaining about this or that and always thinks calls go against him. I bet he gets more calls than some other players because of his big name and his great abilities.
Since the 60's, hockey referees have been known to let the really good players play a little, and to be a little more harsh in penalizing those who would do the big stars harm. Jagr, despite hardships in the past and his lack of complete recognition as a star from the league, is a darn good player and the refs will call things against him before they would a player on the Ranger's 4th line.
And how could the refs be racist against Jagr? He's as white as they come in the NHL, just like most of the refs.

Old school Hockey says guys like Colton Orr and Ryan Holweg are supposed to do something about that. Not the referees and not Shanahan.
The job of your enforcer is to make sure no one takes liberties with your star players. You Slash and Hack at Jagr then they do the same to your star player or make you drop the gloves. Same thing they're supposed to do when the Goalie gets run.
As well big guys like Jagr and Ovechkin don't seem to get the same treatment from the refs that the little guys like Daniel Briere and Martin St. Lous get. Anyone just hits those smaller players and the whistle seems to get pulled out. Every time I see Jagr skating he seems to be carrying defenders on his back as he makes his way towards the net with the puck. But the refs don't seem to call it because he's a bigger guy. That's the true Bias.

None of this would happen if their wasn't an instigator rule. There is not much that can change until you fix that and allow fighting to let the players ref themselves. You get the same penalty for flipping the puck over the boards or handling the puck outside the trapezoid as you do for slashing a guy's wrist hard enough to break it. But you get caught every time for the puck over the boards and only 50-50 the referee sees the slash.
