To determine stocking levels you need at least 12 inches of surface area for each inch of fish (figure the size that the fish will grow to as adults). To calculate surface area multiply the length of the tank by the width, divide this number by 12 and this is the number of inches of fish that you can have.

And... this assumes that you have long slender fish. Wider fish require more surface area. Also some fish produce more waste than others and can require as much as 20 inches of surface area per inch.

So... I suggest get your tank established (there is a nitrogen cycle that must be completed) - until your tank is stabilized you may lose lots of fish. Read LOTS, ask questions ( especially on the nitrogen cycle) I have included some links... I suggest you read fish-keeping ABC's on the first site and go to the library on the second.

ALSO- I know that some will say 1 inch per gallon, but this calculation does not take into account the shape of the tank.

It depends on the size of the fish. A good rule of thumb to follow is to have 1 gallon per inch of fish (length-wise). It is possible to have more, but you would need to change the water more frequently to get rid of the build-up of toxic chemicals, so it might be more trouble than it's worth.

It should be just fine. Just make sure you let the water sit for 24-48 hours before you put the fish in and learn about the types of fish you bought, some fish grow to the size of their environment and some fish if you are mixing them don't get along. Then some fish reproduce like crazy so just weigh your options. Good luck with your aquarium:) Feel free to e-mail me for any fish questions you may have.

Ok..it depends on what kind of fish...Goldfish..Hell no. they are dirty and the ammonia level will kill them all..dont get goldfish...Ok the rule is... only One inch of fish per gallon of water,,,(Going by the adult size of the fish). Make sure you have proper filter, and heater.
