Lol...I was thinking about helping, until (s)he said "show work please." Well, I'll still help: use either combination or substitution (i.e., either 1] add the two sides of the two equations together, or 2] solve one equation for one variable, and substitute that into the other equation).

1)
multiply x+1=4 by 2 and subtract from the other equation
5x+2y=11
-(2x+2y=8)
3x=3
x=1
substitute.
1+y=4
y=3
to check it substitute back in.

2)
multiply 2p+5q=15 times 3
you get: 6p+15q=45
??? but.6p+15q=-29
no solution.

3)a=1 and b=1
3a+b=4 times 2 = 6a+2b=8
therefore a and b must be one
substitute to check..
3(1)+1=4 check.
6+1=8. check.

1) 5x + 2y = 11 and x + y = 4
Take the 2nd expression: x = 4 - y
Then: 5(4 - y) + 2y =11
> 20 - 5y + 2y = 11
> - 5y + 2y = 11 - 20
> -3y = - 9
> y = 3!!!!!!!
if x = 4 - y
Then x = 4 - 3 = 1!!!!!

Now you can aply the same simple reasoning to solve the others!
You can do it!
Good luck!

1. x = 1 and y = 3
3. a = 1 and b = 1

You have the problems and the solutions for two of the problems. Figure out how to get there by reading your algebra book. Once you do that, problem 2 will be easy.

In all of these equation pairs, you must find one variable in terms of the other. Let us find x in terms of y.

1) x + y = 4
can be written as
x = 4 - y
Therefore you can replace the first equation's x with 4 - y, getting...
5(4-y) + 2y = 11
Simplify...
20-5y + 2y = 11
-3y = -9
y = 3
Then, plug it back in to find x.
x + 3 = 4
x = 1

Now, do the rest yourself!

1) x=4-y
5(4-y)+2y=11
20-5y+2y=11
20-3y=11
-3y=11-20
-3y=-9
y=-9/-3
y=3
