It doesn't list a 7200 rpm drive as an option, so i'd like to switch it out Can this be done? SATA interface. Is it a good idea? Between vista and 2 gigs of memory I doubt a faster hard drive will make the system overheat.

in general it's possible. the problem is not overheating but power consumption (this may be the reason why HP isn't offering this type of disk for the dv6000 series - it's offered for the dv9000 series). keep in mind that the weak part of every laptop is the internal power module.
a normal user hasn't a real benefit and would hardly recognise a difference. the only purpose i know of where a 7200 rpm disk is needed, is when you are recording music live with 24 channels simultaneously. in this case a 5400 rpm disk would be too slow.
i wouldn't recommend to switch to a 7200 rpm disk just for the sake of having one.
