Look at aviation. Before World War I, aviation was just a hobby for bored or wealthy people with little or no commercial or military application. Between the World War, aviation took the advancement made during the war and built on them. Air mail, cross country flights, cross Atlantic flights, and around the world flights - commercial aviation followed. World War II, same thing, after the war, big prop driven passenger planes followed by jet commercial jet liners and easy world travel.
Without the technological advances made in aviation during the conflicts, none of the commercials advances would have happened in a timely manner. Proof, from first flight in 1903 to landing on the moon is just over 60 years.
