is the story of the groundhog seein his shadow just a myth?

my mother just asked me did i actually believe that! i'm 17 and all my life i thought that wen the groundhog see his shadow, its 6 more weeks of winter. she says its gonna be 6 more weeks of winter regardless. who's right?

Where I live the groundhog did not see his shadow and that would mean spring is near. However mom is right this time, silly. LOL.

Now why would a groundhog seeing it's shadow mean anything? I do not know that we will have 6, 7, or 27 more weeks of winter, but I do know that groundhogs can not predict anything.

Can you imagine any kind of logical connection between a groundhog's shadow and the weather for the ensuing six weeks? How could such a connection exist?
