That's why we don't live in a Democracy. It is to protect us against the work of propagandists who influence the public opinion. If this nation were governed by a mere 'majority opinion' rather than by the Constitutional duties of our public officials, it would collapse quickly.

The poles and statistics don't support my own personal findings.
Perhaps my sample isn't large enough - but when I discuss our policies or the war in Iraq with different people I meet, I definitely do NOT find that 70 or 80% of the people (as indicated by just about every pole I see in the media - and on Y/A) are against the war. And I live in a true, blue state!
It astounds me that the "poles" could show this discrepancy for a president that the people re-elected.
It begs a little analyzing - do the people poled vote? Are the poles taken in only cherry picked demographic groups? Are they self-full filling prophesy poles taken to affirm the pollster's position? And why is the spread so wide - 21% on one site vs. 39% on another?
Something definitely isn't on the up and up here - it just doesn't add up, that's for sure.
And, for what it's worth, I answer a lot of questions on Y/A with a definite slate toward conservatism and I'm a staunch Bush supporter - and when I recently checked the history of my answers, I recorded 51 thumbs up vs. 59 thumbs down - certainly not what I expected considering the "poles" show a liberal bias of almost 8 to 2.
Just some food for thought. Perhaps we must be a little more critical of some of the information we are fed and check several different sources rather than allow ourselves to be spoon fed other people's opinions and conclusions.

Democracy (literally "rule by the people", from the Greek demos, "people," and kratos, "rule"[1]) is a form of government. Today, the term democracy is often used to refer to liberal democracy,[2] but there is no necessity that democracies be liberal (i.e. respectful of individual liberty and property) and in some cases may be illiberal democracies. There are many other varieties and the methods used to govern differ. While the term democracy is typically used in the context of a political state, the principles are also applicable to other bodies such as intergovernmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, grassroot organizations, labor unions, industry trade groups, professional bodies, and learned societies.
i am distressed by the way life is changing for us all. things do not seem to be getting any better, in fact all i can see is that it is getting worse. Poverty, hunger, wars, reality TV, fast food greed, globalisation of brands, the ineptitude of governments, the weakness of the United Nations, the hatred of human against human, whether it is religion or race or colour of their skin. After centuries, the human is still a stupid beast that does not learn from the mistakes of the past. We live our lives in self contained bubbles, in a culture of fear, consumerism and false hope. We watch and read media drivel that is manipulated and censored, we are told what is important, we are not fully informed to what is really going on around us. We follow the herd, like sheep to the slaughter, believing everything and nothing. we are not living in a free society, we pay taxes on everything we need. We are forced to work in inane and ridiculous jobs that only serve the needs of those who always want more money and power,we work, to pay the bills and buy the things that in reality we do not really need... but when is enough truly enough? why do these faceless people (who are in charge of the world's business and possibly governments as well) always want more? why do they feel the need to fill the world with corporate branded product? why do they want the power? what will they do with this power? why do we tolerate this? why do i tolerate it? why do you?

Is there a question here? If you are attempting to suggest that some type of unnamed minority group is running the world you need to do more research on your own. I'd bet you could find their names and addresses on the Internet that a minority of Americans (computer geeks) created for the benefit of the world.
