John Steinbeck wrote "The Grapes of Wrath" to try and illustrate the bad situation that migrant workers of that time (the late 1930's) often found themselves in. "The Grapes of Wrath" is a political novel, written to criticize the government, social and business policies of the time, which is also why the characters are so flat in comparison with Steinbeck's realistic writing style; they are archetypes rather than real people, each representing a specific embodiment of human struggles and ideals.

John Steinbeck wrote "The Grapes of Wrath" to portray how life was like during The Great Depression. He gave examples of the brutality of land owners, how nearly everyone was deprieved, how everything people usually took for granted was--well--not granted to them. Also, Steinbeck wrote of the Joads in one chapter, then in the next chapter, he uses generic words like, 'the men' 'the women' 'the land'
not really reffering to just one person, rather reffering to the entire country, because that was what it was like during that period for EVERYONE during the Depression.
