You can do a search, but I believe the songs were called ***** Spirtuals. They often had a cadence which helped people to work together in a group, shoveling, picking, etc.

Often the song held information for possible runaway slaves in the area. Example: If you were hiding out in the woods and you heard slaves singing, "Wade in the water..." it meant that the slaveowners were getting the dogs out to hunt.

It is a combination of R.C. Christianity and their own religion. They originally adopted the Saints but only to use their names for their own gods, in order to hide the fact that they were still affiliating their worship with them. There is a specific name for this religion, some people confuse it with voodoo, but it is not. It is something that is like Santeria . Sorry cant remember the exact name.
