You should check with the Equine Medical practices in your area. Get a good recommendation from your vet. Also check with animal control. Lots of times (especially in winter when feed gets expensive) you can find a good horse at a good price.

Hi Horse Lover, there are a lot of horses around 1,000 in WI listed on the following sites (a lot of them are all ready mentioned above)
The best three:
http://www.equine.com
http://agdirect.com
http://www.equinehits.com
Some more that just don't have as many horses:
http://www.netequine.com
http://www.dreamhorse.com
http://www.horsetopia.com
These are all good sites to look on. Remember, when buying horses this way, don't wear your heart on your sleeve! You have to look for the worse, and understand the first horse is not really the right horse! Always look at a horse at least three times before buying, and take a trainer along and ask them to be truly honest in their opinion. A lease period is best. I know this may sound harsh - but I learned it all the hard way. I bought the wrong horse, and he broke my heart six months later. The girl who used to want to be a trainer and ride all day doesn't ride anymore because he scared me so badly so many times. Please don't make the same mistake. I'm actually selling my horse in WI and he matches your description, but you don't want him. Hope you find a good one! (over ten years is best)

I wouldnt suggest getting a horse under 1000 dollars unless you know the horse because cheap horses might not be good buys. usually(not always) they have bad habits(cribbing, sitting back) or are green. look more in the $1500-2500 range. good horses are somewhere in there. My mom wont tell me how much my horse was but i think he was in that range.
