What are some of the main events that made Nelson Mandela so memorable? ( Helped slaves in South Africa (how?), stayed in prison,etc)

When Mandela was released in 1990, he could
have made a call for his supporter to fight in the
streets. He opted to bring people together,
and not make a nation of black and white.
He decreed that all who lived on that soil were
South Africian's. Nelson Mandela to me is one
of the most influential political leaders in the
last one hundred years.
