If you are not going to be paid in Japan, you don't need a working visa. But you will need special permits if you are going to be filming in public places, etc. You know the drill. Especially if this is an independent venture. Very Big hassle.

If you are filming for a company in Japan, and they are going to pay you in Japan, you will need a working visa, but they should know that and take care of it for you.

Good luck.

Usually, many people enter Japan as tourists and declare on their entry form that their reason for visiting Japan is business. In your case, you can do the same.
You can mention that you are a technical advisor for the filming production.
The lead time it takes to prepare an actual working visa takes weeks. Waiting weeks to go to a few meetings would be a very unwise use of time.

Your employer should be taking care of this ! I believe it's not legal there to work on a tourist visa. There maybe exceptions to the law though. But you might want to talk to your employer ASAP...
