Salt is "good for the environment" because it is PART of the environment, i.e., when rocks decompose into soil, salt is one of the by-products. Animals need salt to survive, so when exposed soil contains more salt than the surrounding earth, it becomes a natural 'salt-lick' and many animals go to this location and enjoy some delicious, healthy salt.
Salt is water-soluble, so rain dissolves it and soil absorbs it down to the level it can reach; if that level is rather consistent, such as low-rainfall areas like deserts, then a 'hard-pan' is created, a more-or-less consistent layer made of calcium carbonate and salts that accumulate and stop rainwater from penetrating any deeper.
There are plants that PREFER a saltier environment and thrive where most other plant life would perish - you can google these plants using the word, "salt-tolerant'.
