i would suggest starting with a blank sketch book. your own imagination is always best.

magazines, newspapers, books.... really anything with illustrations can be helpful.

also, you can check out these books from Amazon. they could be really enjoyable for him.

I don't know any books that I really enjoy drawing from.
it really depends on what sort of thing he's into. if he's into comic books then go to a comic store there's usually alot of old ones availible for 25cents to a dollar flea markets are awsome as well. If he likes drawing more realistic things then magazines are usually good.
I suggest trying the flea market first, just browse around and see if anything seems to suit him.
if he's more interested in fine arts or acutally learning the technical side, a nice anatomy book can do wonders, or anything that's specific to life drawing

With free time he should be able to develop his skills on his own to a certain extent. I would recommend a subscription to an art magazine such as Juxtapoz where he can keep in touch with what is happening in the art world. He may become inspired.

yea i would say it depends what hes into. i would sugest gettig him a sketchbook and a couple national geographic books with pictures of alot of animals

just give him pictures from magizine or portarait and a sketch book
