Are there any areas of which to look for gems and such out in say coal city Illinios? I belive there might be gems out there because of the coal out there, hence the name but are there even any gems out there?

The chances of finding gem in a area dominated by coal is pretty remote. Most gems are associated with igneous rock types or pegmatites with the exception of pearls and other organics. Gems can also be found in alluvial deposits, but again associated with weathered igneous rocks. You'll have more of a chance finding fossils in that type of area. Most cities have a gem collectors club, try asking them. Good luck!
