Why is it important for the cell to maintain a semipermeable membrane?

First it helps keep the balance of ions in the cell. It also allows small essential molecules through.

it is important b/c some things like proteins must be able to pass through, and that a cell can choose thus it is semipermeable, some things are allowed to pass through by the cell like large proteins through protien doorways

if the cell were completely permiable.. anything could get in at anytime... like virus' or bacteria .... or too much water.. but if it were completely impermeable.. then no water or nutrients could get in..and nothing could get out.. like energy or waste
