Use distributive property:
2x-20x-4=3x+17
-18x-4=3x+17

Subtract 3x from both sides:
-21x-4=17

Add 4 from both sides:
-21x=21

Divide -21 from both sides:
x=-1

Check:
2(-1)-4(5(-1)+1)=3(-1)+17
-2-4(-5+1)=-3+17
-2-4(-4)=14
-2+16=14
14=14

Distribute the 4: 2x -20x -4 = 3x + 17
Combine like terms: -18x -4 = 3x + 17
Add 4 to both sides: -18x - 4 + 4 = 3x + 17 + 4
Subtract 3x from both sides: -18x = 21
Divide both sides by -18: x = 21 / -18
