When exactly is a woman in her fertile window? (I.e- When is she the most fertile?) And, how long is a woman usually fertile? I've been doing some research and i keep getting mixed various answers. How long after or before a woman gets her menstrual cycle should she have sex to maximize increasing a pregnancy? Thanks!

Ovulation really has nothing to do with menstruation, except that if ovulation happens at the too close to the start of menstruation in can impair implantation of the egg.

The only way to tell when a women ovulates is to use a) basal body temperature b) saliva tests c) urine tests. And you should have sex in the days leading up to ovulation.

However having sex every other day or more often, works better and if you won't miss the "window of opportunity" if your calculations are off.

It varies w/ the woman. I think the average is around 6 days a month based on the presence of fertile cervical fluid and proximity to ovulation.

The best way to know FOR YOU is to chart your fertility signs. Day counting really only works for those women who have textbook cycles or nearly so. But day counting still can't tell you if you are ovulating for sure, having enough fertile cervical fluid, or have a long enough luteal phase.

I highly recommend the following resources: Fertilityfriend.com (software for free and for purchase, online charting tutorial). Ovusoft.com (charting software for purchase and discussion groups), Couple-to-Couple League (not sure of the website). The books: Taking Charge of Your Fertility (assoc w/ ovusoft) and Garden of Fertility. TCOYF at least should be available at the library.
