diatenatous earth, or Boric acid. Both safe to humans and animals. the earth is like glass to insects and they dont like to walk through it, the boric acid is the stuff they make Visene eye drops with. mix a cap full of boric acid with an equal part of sugar. ad a bit of water and make a paste. leave the cap laying where the ants are, watch them eat it up. resist the temptation to just wipe them up then. let them take it to the nest. after a few days you will notice the ants getting smaller, its because the big ones are dead. after about a week, no more ants. just have to be patiant is all, as for where thay come from? i think they control middle earth.

sugar ants originate from Cuba,, since the last hurricanes wiped out much of Fidels sugar cane fields they have been tunneling under the gulf and invading your area. You need to learn to speak Spanish so you can identify the illegal ones and join a home gang to roust them back to the island!! if that doesn't work you can wipe your counters with Lysol, ammonia, pinesol etc to keep them out of the kitchen...there is a mixture of 1 cup of water, 2 cups of sugar and 2 tablespoons of boric acid you can try,,, they will take this home and kill the queen and others,,,do not let kids or pets near the mixture!! apply a few drops here and there were you see the ants and they will take care of the rest

the best and easiest way any to make sure that you don't harm any pets in the neighborhood go to you're local Lowe's store and get this product "Grant's kills ants" bait stations. they stick in the ground around the perimeter of the home the ants crawl in then take the bait to the nest. with in a week or so the problem will be gone. its a lot safer and very effective. i use them at all my apartments in N.C. when ever a ant problem presents themselves (over 20,000 units). hope this helps.
