You are being unrealistic if you think any duct cleaning machine will get your ducts 100% clean. It does not matter which method you use, they are all about the same. They need to run brushes through each register and in the main trunk line in the basement. The return-air is the dirtiest part. There could be an inch of build-up and alot of 'dust bunnies". Its not a sure fire process, depends on how hard the workers try to get them clean. It could take two days to get them right. Its a rip off altogether if you ask me. I would spend the money on a great filtering system, that wont let most of the particles to even enter your living space. Its money better spent.

You don't want to mess with a gas heater. if it is older there is a chance the heat exchanger is bad and burning almuminum. this is a wierd smell. what this means is there is a leak in the part of the heater that devides the fire from the actual air going throgh to heat the home. when the heat exchanger gets old, it burns away some of the metal and lets CO2 into the home. along with burnt aluminum. First of all. if there is anyone living there getting headaches, feeling tired, then you may have a seriouse problem. get them out open a window and call for help. Get a licenced repair company to look at it,

Oysh, that sucks. I don't know what it is, but you could try cleaning all the vents with water and vinegar. You could also put a bowl of vinegar next to the air duct until you figure out what it is. Good Luck =0)

It could be mold or it could be something (rodent) died inside the ducts. Call a duct cleaning company - they can help fix the problem.

I'd call a furnace man, quick, you may have a big problem on your hands if you aren't careful. When my dad bought his new furnace he couldn't find the operating instructions, yet when it was turned on he smelled something, luckily they found it before it caused a huge fire! because it was in the heat chamber. I hope this helps you out.

It is a very small chance that it is mold. More like to be a dead critter. However with out delay I would call my utility company or whoever services your furnace IMMEDIATLY. Let them determine if it is the furnance first.

Check and see if your flue or chimney is open and exhaust is leaving. Any blockage in there would cause a back run of combustion fumes into the house
