Visit the NASA television channel sometime. If you don't have it at home, ask your school or call NASA for access. They have been showing EXTRAORDINARY films about the projects for the colonies on Mars. It's more than possible. It's happening. When people sailed off in ships from Europe long ago to seek the New World, they were laughed at because "everyone KNOWS that anyone who sails beyond the horizon will fall off the edge of the Earth."

Eventually, the earth will no longer be inhabitable. NASA is starting early in trying to find another place to send humans to keep our race going. Right now, it is extremely unsafe to send anyone that far. It would take 6 months for the rocket to reach Mars, by then the astronauts may die from lack of oxygen and exercise. The body can handle only a short period of time in space, and until we find a faster way of travel, no one is going to Mars.

In all the time since space exploration had started, and that there was an accident, like a rocket exploding, how many people on the ground were hurt?
Zero. That is how many. Rockets take off in a direction that makes them overfly uninhabited areas, like an ocean, first, so any mishaps will not hurt anyone.
The people on board rockets know what they are doing, and they accept the risk. In fact, astronauts are ALL volunteers, and NASA has more candidates than places available.
So, what is your point? What are you afraid of?
More people are dying in car crash EVERY DAY than have died in space exploration related activities over the last 45 years total.

It's gonna be quite some time before humans will be able to make the long trip to mars (or Phobos, Mars' moon). There are deadly dust storms on Mars that may cause a problem if we try to visit, so Phobos may be a good shelter from the storms. Also, NASA will make sure that the risks of something going wrong are very low before allowing the mission to begin. The safety of the astronauts is obviously very important to them.

Couldn't the rocket explode anytime we go up? You have to explore new venues. They make all the safety precautions. They do think of anything that could go wrong and address all the problems from past problems and research. Don't worry, the astronauts are in good hands. No rocket exploded in 1969 when we went to the moon.

If you want real information here's two websites:

nasa.gov and space.com

You can start by learning what's actually going on--NASA plans for Mars are very preliminary--that's not where the focus is. And as for waste--NASA has paid for itself many times over in new technology--including the computer technology that makes it possible for you to ask your question on the Internet.

Well, you asked for opinions...

I think that it will be a huge waste of money.

We should set up a small colony in the Sudan first to prove
that we can really feed and keep "some" people safe there.
Another place to set up a colony for the same reason is
in Lebanon ()say the Gaza Strip), or in IRAQ (say in downtown
Bagdad). Wouldn't it be nice to be able to live in peace here on earth for a change?
