When adding cm does it remain cm or cm^2 and when multiplying say 2cm x 2cm would it be 4 cm^2?

Adding two units will remain cm. Multiplying is cm^2 (squared) if you multiply 2 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm, then since you are multiplying 3 of them it is 8 cm ^3

when adding it stays as cm...when multiplying it changes to cm^2

It would remain just 4 cm.
This is because you aren't finding the area.
If you were, then it would be 4 squared.
