an ETHERNET cable. How can I get the computers to recognize each other? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (Both are running WindowsXP and both are HP computers).

their are 2 types of network cables

their is the normal patch cable and a crossover cable (Usually says on the cable itself)

A normal patch cable is fine if you have a Hub both computers will be able to share files/Internet ect with each other at the maximum speed possible to the slowest computer.

With a Crossover cable the wires are crossover so that when 1 computer sends a message it doesn't hit the message of the laptop trying to the same

so basically a crossover cable is what you want to just plug in 1 computer directly into the laptop.

Or using your network cable you could buy a small networking kit from PC World ect for £20 includes hub, network cards, cables

hope that helps

A regular network cable wont work, you need a crossover cable for starts. It looks the same but the wires are reversed on one end.

this isn't necessarily a fix, but it may make it so you can atleast get to one or the other.

you would need special drivers to do it that way. Google "home network setup" and see what you find. there may be free software for someone in your position.
