gentlemen callers are there to show laura that her mother had men after her. she's the typical southern belle. while we know that Laura is not like her mother she doesn't even have gentlemen callers.i think she is just trying to persuade her to find a man since she had so many men after her.

The gentleman callers really accentuate the isolation of Laura and the chasm that exists between Laura and her mother. They are important catalysts who drive the action between these women.
