I can see ione reason why you like him so much - he won't cheat on his girlfriend. That's a great quality in a person.
You could try to second-guess the reason he gave you for not wanting to go out with you. But if he's honest with you at other times, I'd take what he says at face value.
If he's a friend for life, be patient. Time may change things.
In the meantime, maybe this would be a good time for you to seek out additional friends so that you sort of diversify your portfolio and not be as focused on him.

Wait, he already has a girlfriend...but he won't go out with you cuz you're SO CLOSE or because you are not his "dating" type.
Look, any guy who thinks another girl is hot and likes them as a friend would date them...if they knew and like you better than who they are currently with. Unless you are already friends with benefits - in which case some guys would rather keep it that way.
If you are indeed "in love" you should tell him, regardless of what happens....which is better - to take a chance and maybe get burned...or to NEVER take the chance and NEVER know what MIGHT'VE BEEN....

Well if he is with someone else there is nothing you can do. If he doesn't want to take a chance of ending your friendship if something should happen then that is good of him. He obviously really cherishes your friendship. He is taken so leave it alone but when he and her split talk to him about you to and say how do you know if you do not try.

some times in life we have to take chances it sounds like he likes you but does not wont to lose you so you need to re ashore him that you guys have been so close for a long time and you have these feelings for him and just tell him its all or nothing
