Yes you need a GameCube memory card and GCN controller for GameCube games. You can't even use the classic controller with GCN games.
The Wii becomes a Gamecube for 100% backwards compatibility, The bad side to this is that it has no feature on the Wii that wasn't on a real GameCube can't be used.

You don't need a Game Cube memory card, you need an SD memory card. The same type the cameras use. You'll also need a card to save any data for the games that you download from the Wii store.
