It can be a hard habit to break because mostly people don't think about what they are doing while they do it. And unlike over eating or smoking or over drinking, it is not deadly so the motivation is not a powerful. But years of nail biting can result in permanent damage to nails, nail beds and finger tips. I've seen some really unattractive results and that might help motivate you, because once the damage is done (particularly if you bite into the nailbed and cuticle), there is no way to repair it. Motivation is the first step; you have to move not-biting nails up the ladder of concerns (for a while, until you make not-biting the new habit, see?). Saying it to yourself and stopping your self is a good way to make it real for your habit-mind, and feel good emotion when you say it, your mind like to feel good and if you can say "WOW, I'm NOT going to bite my nails and it's GREAT!" (I know it sound silly but, emotions are faster as habits) often it will happen faster. Second is to be patient if you slip, like over-eating or anything else, when you catch yourself at it, avoid the blame/guilt/recrimination phase and just stop, again and again until the new habit (not biting) is habit. There are things you can paint on the nails that taste bad and are supposed to remind you, but most say that doesn't work. Using hand cream a lot is helpful (if it won't make give you greasy finger prints at work), it has a taste and a lot of nail biters bit dry cuticle too. Keep a file or nipper handy if you bite your nails because they are thin and tear leaving snaggy edges (I've hardly ever met a nail biter who had thick nails). Getting professional manicures can help, once people have paid to have their nails look good, they are more reluctant to damage them. Plus your manicurist will probably give you a pep-talk each time (do not use artificial nails to break the habit, unless you plan to keep them for a while).
Lastly, this might motivate you, unless you are scrubbing your hands and nails for ten minutes with soap, when you put your fingers into your mouth you are taking into your body all the germs from everything you touched at work, in the store, at school....... Think about it.

Go to the chemist and ask for "never suck". Its a small bottle that you apply on like nail polish, but doesn't have a very nice taste! But don't worry, it has a nice colour, no smell and goes smoothly onto your nails.
